The major incident room, or MIR, filled within minutes of Jake’s announcement, and every one of the thirty-two staff members were already waiting for Mamadou to enter exactly five minutes later.

‘I don’t need to give you all a recap,’ he started, commanding the attention of the entire floor. ‘You all know the situation. You all know what’s going on. What I want to know is what we’re doing to prevent it.’

A forest of hands shot into the air. Mamadou picked his first victim.

A member of Red Team.

‘Following Jake’s intel, sir, and the idea that Abraham Al Bakir was leaving behind clues, we looked into the CCTV footage of Westfield Shopping Centre over the past couple of nights. Paying particular attention to the bins inside the premises.’

Jake sensed where this was headed immediately. And he didn’t like what was coming next.

‘We have footage from two nights ago showing someone we believe to be Hasan Qasim placing explosives inside the bins along the main thoroughfare. We checked and he’s a member of the cleaning staff at the centre. So far, we’ve counted fifteen IED packages.’

‘Fuck a duck,’ Mamadou said before catching himself. ‘Has the centre been warned?’

‘Yes, sir,’ added another member of Red Team. ‘Centre management has been informed, and they’ve let bomb squad in already. The team are diffusing the explosives as we speak.’

‘Do we have any information on how they work? Are they similar to the one found in the bin and on Abraham?’

‘Virtually identical, sir. So I’m told.’

That meant Jake had been right. Abraham had been signalling the plan to them all along. A terrorist trying to redeem himself? Jake thought it would take a lot more than that.

‘Where’s the missing man?’ Mamadou asked. ‘Have we got a trace on his phone?’

Nobody in the room was brave enough to answer.

Until the deputy SIO cleared his throat. ‘We’re struggling at the moment, Mam. He’s disappeared. He wasn’t at his home address; nor was he at any of the addresses DI Bates and his team have identified. He doesn’t have a mobile phone registered in his name, so we’re assuming that he’s working on burners. And any phone that we’ve traced back to him in the past is now defunct.’

‘What about Farsaid Dali?’

‘We’re monitoring him as well. So far, nothing.’

Mamadou paced from side to side, deep in thought. Then he came to a stop, scratching the top of his ear.

‘We need to monitor all mobile phones within a five-hundred-metre radius of the shopping centre. If our missing man is going to come waltzing into the centre, strapped to the heavens, we need to make sure we find him before he can detonate.’

‘You think he’s going to be there, sir?’ Jake asked.

Mamadou nodded. ‘He’s on a mission. Right now I’m guessing he’s panicked, freaking out that the rest of his mates have been arrested, and so he’s going to do what he’s been told – he’s going to see this through to the end. In addition, Abraham was murdered. We mustn’t forget that.
